GDH94 Posted April 22, 2018 Report Share Posted April 22, 2018 I've only read snippets here and there of the first book back in high school, so I don't have anything positive or negative to say about the content of the books/films themselves. But I will say that 50 Shades made BDSM "erotica" widely available and relatively socially acceptable for women, in an era where it's still often frowned upon for women to enjoy BDSM, porn, or (gasp!) masturbation. For someone who had never delved into those things before, having a popular book series about it, available for purchase at a grocery store was probably a thrill. With the release of the most recent sequel back in February, I was surprised to see sooo many of my girl friends casually opening up about their secret/repressed kinks, fetishes, and fantasies. That in turn made me feel comfortable and confident in sharing my own experiences, and I just think that kind of exchange is very healthy for this scene. I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but it's something positive I can say about the franchise. Pure erotica. Hah! I remember reading an article a long time ago that didn’t harp on the glaring negativities of the book but instead highlighted how it was written at a comically low reading level. onebefore Posted June 19, 2018 Report Share Posted June 19, 2018 I found the film much better, surprising in a way, since it seemed to stick quite close to the book, or as much as a read of it anyway. For reasons I have yet to understand, the film brought me to at least the brink of plausibility. Or perhaps to where I could at least understand the fantasy. Maybe because commercial advertising pushing products based on fantasy does not really come in novel format. I think that is it, because of the way the film accessed advertising fantasy, I at least understood what the appeal might be. The book was recommended to me by one of my bondage model-collaborators that I had had a long standing relationship with. She raved about it. I didn't even know she read. And it seemed to address the thing we had in common. So I BADLY wanted to like the book. I slugged on reading it long after I had lost interest or even any memory of the plot. I found the premise so unlikely, and the inner debate of the female protagonist even more implausible, I just wanted to slap her myself. And the prose didn't carry me through the suspension of disbelieve. But like I say the movie, as a sort of long advertising fantasy, You know, like you gotta pick the right hair color product when you're meeting your man on the helipad at least gave me enough to make be tolerable for awhile. By comparison, unfair comparison, but to make my point, when I picked up "Interview with a Vampire" randomly left in the hallway of my building, I had no idea who Anne Rice was, I thought the vampire sub-genre was just silly tweener stuff. The prose hooked me solid, the story addicted me, the novel slammed my psyche like a narcotic. I read it all night in a single sitting. And bought the sequel the following day. DomGames Posted August 13, 2018 Report Share Posted August 13, 2018 Positive 50 Shades Feedback i have read the books (somewhat vanilla) and have seen the first two movies. I typically enjoy books far more. However when I had the opportunity to see the movie I was with a large group of friends male and female. It promoted much discussion and debate. This group was some of the most vanilla people you will ever meet. The movie most certainly interested them. They all have now read the series and although I only know a few personal details about there new experiences and explorations..... the books / movie has certainly created sexual curiosity amoung the group . Perhaps the younger generation (<35) is somewhat more free in their sexuality.... I feel this was geared to the 35-60 generation that grew up thinking homosexuality was a curse and free sexuality was even worse. I must say having my dark-side quietly fed (BDSM) it was relief to see my friends open up their minds enough to even discuss sexuall topics or different lifestyles. Some have experienced BDSM, two came out, and others have just lowered their mental guard to experiencing something new. Both sexually and spiritually. So I think, at least in my case, being part of this life we here have, we tend to be more open, more free and of course more demanding in our pursuit of pleasure. Other, more vanilla people, see it as edgy, crazy, and hedonistic....... but more importantly now ACCEPTABLE. So they are more tolerant and generally happier in their lives having changed their sometimes narrow outlooks. I find the added tolerance a GREAT THING. There was also a negotiation regarding the contract. But there was a moment where you could tell she realized HER power in the relationship. Her best scene. It's in her expression when she leaves him at the elevator. When the door closes you realize, hmmmmmm...he's the one stuck in a small box.
