BeardlessBard
So, let's hear it. What is your favorite book, essay, piece of poetry or prose? What are you reading right now? Got any recommendations? I've spent the last semester reading so much feminist and cultural theory that I'm getting sick of this really dense material (that always makes me feel bad about myself). Thankfully, I have read some pretty interesting books. I just finished Slaughterhouse 5 which was fantastic. I'm currently reading Blood Meridian, and goddamn... Cormac McCarthy is a master of the pen. Parataxis is a fun trick. Maybe you ladies are fans of Sylvia Plath. I quote, "Out of the ash / I rise with my red hair / And I eat men like air." Gives me the shivers.
Manpeach
Hey BeardlessBard, If you love poetry, you should check out the "Limericks" thread. there's lost of finely crafted prose there. LOL but seriously, if you like Vonnegut, check out Chuck Palahniuk. Personally, I think Fight Club is his best, so read that one last and don't see the movie before you read the book. The movie is good, but the story unfolds better in print. check out his quotes too
Outcast
I like Vonnegut also. This year I read Huxley, Orwell , and Vonnegut's short story collection. Also I just finished "Shogun" which is a great book. My favorite all time book is "A Confederacy of Dunces" which is probably the funniest book ever written. If lone nut assassins kill famous people with "Catcher in the Rye" in their pocket, Iwould do something extremely absurd with this book in my possession. It's that influential. It's a masterpiece!! BeardlessBard
It is good to see other Vonnegut fans! His work is great. I just started reading "White Noise" by Don DeLillo. Only a few chapters in. It is really quite bizarre. I also just finished "Herland". Interesting. A female only society, and when the men arrive they are instantly subdued. I am not sure I agree with the idea in general though. I doubt a society would suddenly be at peace if all males vanished. Plus the eugenics bit of it just felt like a watered down "Brave New World". Hell, I wasn't even aware it was a book! Maybe when I have some free time this summer. I like Vonnegut also. This year I read Huxley, Orwell , and Vonnegut's short story collection. Hey, let us not include books in the plots of assassins! I already hear enough of one of my hobbies being the downfall of human decency (Gaming in general), I don't need the other making people I am a nut! I actually wasn't a fan of "Catcher in the Rye". How it drove that man to shoot poor Lennon, I will never know. It really wasn't that compelling! Hell, Salinger's short stories are more entertaining. I've actually heard of "A Confederacy of Dunces", but haven't had the chance to read it. As I noted (in another thread) I was looking for something fun, that might be just the thing! Thanks for the advice.

Beardlessbard, If you are feeling angst over "male privilege", or better yet "white male privilege", there is only one true path to enlightenment and assuaging that guilt. booking@fortressnyc.com I happen to be working my way through "Sex at Dawn" recommended by Mistress Zhao at present. LW Implying I haven't already sent an email! I have to wait a bit though. I wasn't aware they only book a month ahead of time. It seems like an interesting book. I'd love to see what the other Mistresses recommend.
